Khong Island or Don Khong – the largest island in Si Phan Don area

Khong Island or Don Khong is the largest island and the seat of administration in the Si Phan Don riverine archipelago located in the Mekong River, Khong District, Champasak Province, southern Laos.

Khong Island or Don Khong

The island is 18 kilometers (11 mi) long (north-south), and 8 kilometers (5.0 mi) at its widest point. Its population is mainly concentrated in the two villages Muang Saen (west) and Muang Khong (east); the latter is the de facto capital of the island as well as the regional seat of government. There are 19 villages on the island and the main source of income comes from fishing.

The former President of Laos, Khamtai Siphandon, has a residence on the island, which is a possible explanation for the high quality of its infrastructure, such as asphalted roads and electricity. Locals tend to travel on longtail boats.

Tourist attractions

One of the most favorite activities on Khong Island is cycling around the countryside. Both in the early morning and late afternoon when temperatures are reasonable and the light is golden, this is an excellent way to pass a few hours, though it’s best to avoid the middle of the day when the heat is oppressive.

Khong Island or Don Khong

There are a few small villages scattered around the island’s edge along with some interesting little temples and pleasant riverside scenery, and those with the time and money could probably get someone to arrange a trek or two, but overall the main attraction here is the gentle pace of life.

Khong Island or Don Khong

Another option is to ride 8km west to Muang Sen, where there’s a marketplace and some wonderful riverside views which are fantastic at sunset.

Other options from Khong Island include trips that are easier to stage from Don Det but worth it if you’re only staying on Khong Island. You can always visit Don Khon on a daytrip and visit the Li Phi Waterfalls as well as seeing the Irrawaddy dolphins and the remains of the old French railroad.
